Learning concept at Laurea

Universities of applied sciences have three tasks set by law: research and development, regional development, and
pedagogy. The effective integration of these three tasks has been seen as one of the keys to the successful
completion of Laurea's statutory duties. The aim for Laurea is to produce competent graduates who become
research-oriented developers of their work and their fields. A further aim is to develop and renew labour market
competence through research and to produce innovations that make use of multidisciplinary competence to have an
impact on our surroundings.

Laurea's learning concept is embodied in the Learning by Developing model, which has been rewarded by the
Finnish Higher Education Evaluation Council. The objective of learning is competence, which is visible as new ways
and means of working, and which allows for renewal of the labour market and the field. Learning by Developing
takes place in workplace-oriented projects in which students, lecturers, workplace experts and customers work
together to develop innovative solutions.

Students are seen as partners who, as their competence develops, are able to take on increasing responsibility and
make use of their creativity to complete research and development tasks. Students acquire competence in learning
environments comprising diverse workshops and labs. Professional competence is constructed out of the integrated
combination of empirical data, a deep understanding of it, and skills in doing and handling situations. Working
together to build knowledge-based skills leads to competence that allows students to manage diverse situations in
the constantly changing world of work.

Learning at Laurea progresses through an orientation of skills. Scientific data is significant as a tool. Learning directs
students to process knowledge and to select ethically significant knowledge that can be utilised and applied in
development projects that correspond to their degrees. Laurea places importance on ensuring that students grow
into skilled experts who can renew the labour market. Workplace-oriented development projects as learning
environments allow for genuine learning, the construction of partnership networks, the application of meaningful
experiences and the development of creativity and research orientation. In the work-oriented development projects,
individuals and the target community develop their competence together. In addition, they generate new knowledge
for developing and reforming the labour market.

Learning environments

The aim of the learning environment is to facilitate the achievement of learning outcomes while supporting the
generation and development of new competence. Laurea's learning environments utilise internal and external
networks and are in constant interaction with the workplace. Regional influence increases through communities and
the networks that they form. Students use projects to learn the basics of networking, social skills and communication
with experts in the field. Students grow into developers by carrying out development tasks and by interacting in
competence networks.
Practical applications of learning environments include initiatives and projects that form innovation environments for
the community, as well as various operating spaces designed for learning and development, competence hubs and
development labs.

The student's role and responsibility in learning

In Laurea’s work-oriented research and development projects, the concept of partnership implies cooperation
between teachers, experts from the labour market and students. The cooperation is based on responsible
commitment to the development project. Studying at Laurea requires critical thinking, problem-solving skills, self-
directiveness, a proactive attitude and cooperation skills from students. The studies place a focus on an
independent attitude. In development projects, all participants are seen as learners, because the projects aim to
produce change and generate something new. Partnership also means mutual respect and appreciation for diverse
skills. The progress of the development project requires sharing competence and building new competence out of
different areas of expertise. Students participate as partners who build their competence by obtaining new tools and
by taking part in various research and development initiatives.
The teacher's role at Laurea

The teacher's role in development projects can be described as that of an expert, a participant and a pedagogical
leader. The teacher cannot transfer competence to students but guides the student's learning process.Depending on
their roles, Laurea's teachers are both researchers and developers, influencers in regional development, and
pedagogues. Teachers who work as researchers publish reports that demonstrate the effectiveness of development
projects as reformers and developers of competence in the labour market. As a developer, a teacher is responsible
for ensuring the progress of a development project.

Structure of the curriculum

Laurea’s curricula are based on themes and study units. A theme refers to a wider competence area that typically
requires that a student master several study units within the subject area. The contents of the themes and study
units cover the core vocational competence in the field. Annual themes form an umbrella for studies from the
perspective of increased professional growth. The curriculum contains the nationally defined generic competences
(see Table 1) as part of the objectives set for the themes or study units. Mastering the generic competences
ensures vocational education that meets the requirements set for the level to be obtained at universities of applied
sciences, and mastering the themes builds competence needed in working life.

Competence evaluation

Competence evaluation is based on the objectives described in the curriculum. These objectives define the
requirements that students have to meet to achieve their degree titles. Competence evaluation shows how well the
set objectives have been met. On the one hand, competence is seen as knowledge, skills and values, and on the
other hand, as experience. Evaluation through development projects looks at an individual's and the project
community's learning, the progress and significance of different processes, and the results achieved.Study units are
evaluated on a numerical scale of 0 to 5 or on a pass/fail (H/0) basis. The evaluations apply criteria developed for
evaluating the competence of students at the beginning of their studies and at graduation (see Table 2). The
evaluation criteria for each study unit are given in the study unit's syllabus.

Degree programme's quality evaluation and development

The quality of Laurea’s operations is monitored and developed with the quality assurance system (picture 1.). The
aim of the quality assurance system is e.g. to extensively guarantee the quality of education and of other activities,
systematically produce quality-related data for the development of the operations and to promote recognition of
insufficient quality.
Processes have been described as support for Laurea’s basic operations. The core process is the Learning by
Developing process, its implementation is supported by the Education process, the Strategy and Management
process and the HR process.
Strategy Implementation Plan, where the critical success factors and their indicators have been defined, functions
as a tool for monitoring and evaluating operations. Central indicators for a degree programme’s quality assurance
are e.g. progress of studies, learning through research and development, dropout rate, completion of studies and
development of compentence in graduating students. The results according to the indicators are discussed annually
and based on them the appropriate measures for the development of operations are defined.
Besides the data related to critical success factor indicators, Laurea also collects other feedback and evaluation
data in order to develop the quality of a degree programme. The degree programme specific curriculum is evaluated
annually. In addition to personnel also students and working life representatives take part in the evaluation.
Students’ most important channel of evaluating and developing operations is the student feedback system. Student
feedback system includes feedback questionnaires that measure the quality of education, student’s professional
growth and student wellbeing as well as immediate feedback. Collecting feedback data, its systematic processing
with students and personnel as well as versatile exploitation of the data enable continuous quality development in
education.
Students are actively involved in different development teams both on Laurea and local unit levels. Consultation
meetings between student union LAUREAMKO and the steering group are organised regularly. The aim of the
meetings is to take into account the students’ points of view in the development of the operations. The consultation
meetings are held both on Laurea and local unit levels. Student members participate also in Laurea’s internal audits
which are organised once an academic year. Through the internal audits students contribute to the quality
development of education and other operations.
Laureas curriculum as a part of the European Higher Education Area

Finnish higher education institutions have reformed their curricula in accordance with the creation of the European
Higher Education Area, i.e., the Bologna Process. The EU's strategic objectives regarding education also guide
education in Finland. The Bologna Process covers a total 46 of countries, including some outside the EU. The aim
of the Bologna Process is to establish a consistent, compatible and attractive Higher Education Area in Europe by
2010.
To promote the adoption of internationally understandable, comparable degrees, the process has created a system
based on two main cycles: undergraduate (Bachelor level) and graduate (Master level). Finland has adapted its
degree structure to align it with this European objective. In universities of applied sciences, the two-cycle degree is
implemented in a way that students obtain a first-cycle (Bachelor’s) degree, after which they have the opportunity to
obtain a Master’s degree. The requirement for access to Master’s training is an undergraduate degree plus three
years’ work experience. The long-term objective is that approximately 20 per cent of Bachelor’s graduates will take a
Master’s degree.

Finnish universities of applied sciences adopted ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) credits
in 2005. In the ECTS, one academic year equals 60 credits. The ECTS is a student-centric system. It is based on
the student workload needed to achieve the targets set for each degree programme.
The curricula describe the learning outcomes and competence. From the point of view of promoting international
mobility, curricula must be internationally understandable. The aim of standardising the structures and learning
targets of degrees is to improve the conditions for mobility within and between higher education institutions during
the studies, and also in the workplace after graduation. In terms of the recognition and comparability of degrees
taken in different countries, it is important to link learning targets to concrete competence requirements and
definitions in the labour market.
Laurea’s competence-based curriculum takes into account the demands of the Common European Framework.
Studies are accumulated in the form of credits, and study units form larger modules. Competence is defined in terms
of the students’ learning outcomes. Currently resources are being directed towards further enhancing the ability of
the curriculum implementations to generate new competence and innovations for Laurea’s operating environment.

Global challenges and sustainable development in the curricula

The activities of the higher education institutions are based on responsibility, sustainable development and
understanding and appreciating diversity within the higher education community.
A suggested measure of the Strategy for the Internationalisation of Higher Education Institutions is that the higher
education institutions will increase education and research cooperation based on national and international
networking in order to contribute to the attainment of the goals of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable
Development 2005-2014. Laurea’s curricula will be developed according to the Strategy for the Internationalisation
of Higher Education Institutions 2009-2015. Out of Laurea values sense of community and social responsibility
represent these perspectives most clearly. Moreover, ethical competence of the generic competences of university
of applied sciences degrees also means the ability to apply the principles of sustainable development in one’s own
work. Functioning in the globalising world requires the higher education institutions to critically consider the ethicality
of their operational principles.
The goal is that all Finnish degree programmes have at least 30 cr. of studies in foreign language in their curricula.
The local units proceed towards this goal gradually. In some degree programmes the goal has already been
reached. The goal is also to produce competence that enables participating in solving global problems and building
activities on an ethically sustainable foundation.

Operating environment

Laurea Hyvinkää is located in the centre of a town with 45,000 inhabitants, amid all of its services. The town's vision
for 2017 is: Hyvinkää is an attractive, welcoming and safe urban centre of the Metropolitan Area in Northern
Uusimaa. Hyvinkää promotes its citizens' well-being and the success of business and commerce in the area, and
fosters cooperation between the private sector, the third sector and public service providers. Hyvinkää forms an
active part of the Metropolitan Area. Effective transport connections and the town's excellent position in terms of
logistics support the successful growth of business and industry. As the main centre of Northern Uusimaa, Hyvinkää
works closely with its neighbouring municipalities and the district.
Hyvinkää and the Hyvinkää-Riihimäki economic region contain a significant cluster of educational and de-velopment
organisations. Laurea has established network partnerships with the TechVilla technology centre and the Centre of
Expertise in Lifting and Moving that it administers; with the regional operator of the Cohesion and Competitiveness
Programme (COCO); with Palmenia Centre for Continuing Education and Tampere University of Technology; with
the Hyria secondary education operator and the SYKLI Environmental School of Finland; and with all of their
national and international networks. Laurea's network also includes entrepreneurs' associations focused on
promoting business operations, the Riihimäki and Hyvinkää Chamber of Commerce, HyRi Business Services, the
Employment and Economic Development Centre offices and the First Round Center.

Within the Hyvinkää region's economic structure, the top four employers are: 1) social services, 2) industry, 3) retail
and hospitality, and 4) finance, insurance and business services. The multinational corporation Kone has a
production plant but also specialises in services.
The Hyvinkää unit is closely networked with operators in social service and health care education and research,
development and innovation in the KUUMA district. The unit's main partners are HUS/Hyvinkää Hospital Area, the
local municipalities' social service and health offices, Kiljava Hospital, Järvenpään sosiaalisairaala hospital,
Sosiaalitaito and Diaconia University of Applied Sciences.

As a part of its operating environment, Laurea Hyvinkää predicts and caters for the needs of the surrounding
environment and the Metropolitan Area as a whole in its educational activity. Hyvinkää's Degree Programme in
Nursing particularly takes into account the needs for development in health care in the region and the whole country.
These development areas require professional expertise that can respond to the current needs and predict the
future for health care, health promotion and rehabilitation in society. The task of education in Nursing is to train
expert health care personnel that can provide the population with equitable services in which patient safety is
guaranteed. The aim is that the competence gained during the education corresponds to the requirements of the
population's health, the health care profession, national health policy, the health care employment market and its
development, and technology.

Expertise

The expertise and competence of a nurse are described in accordance with a publication of the Finnish Ministry of
Education (Committee Memoranda and Reports 2006:24).

A nurse is a health care expert whose task in society is to care for patients. In their work, nurses support individuals,
families and communities in diagnosing, achieving and maintaining their state of health in changing circumstances
and in diverse environments, including basic health care, specialist care, social care and the private and third
sectors. They carry out and develop the work of a nurse, which is simultaneously health-promoting, illness-
preventing, healing and rehabilitating. Nurses reinforce the resources of people and communities at different stages
of life. They assist people who encounter illness, disability or death. They contribute care expertise to social
decision-making. They work independently as health care experts when caring for patients and when fulfilling the
instructions of doctors in medical care.
Nurses contribute their expertise to multidisciplinary collaboration, which requires responsibility, a clear vision of
one's own duties, and knowledge of and respect for other professionals' expertise. Nursing is steered by the values,
ethical principles, rules and regulations in the field. Nurses' professional activities are based on valid legislation and
the the provisions in health care policy.

In evidence-based nursing, nurses utilise their professional expertise, their knowledge and experience of the
patient's needs, care recommendations and research data. A nurse's work is based on nursing science. Knowledge
and information from a variety of disciplines is used in professional decision-making. Nursing competence requires
theoretical competence related to nursing, medicine, pharmacology, and research in social and behavioural
sciences. Working as a nurse requires strong ethical and professional decision-making skills. Nurses can acquired
and critically evaluate information and use it as a basis for their work and in developing and evaluating their work
community. Nurses are responsible for developing their own skills and professions. They carry out, manage and
evaluate evidence-based nursing and are in charge of maintaining and developing its quality.

Competences
Professional Growth and Annual Themes

Towards the beginning of the degree programme, students acquire skills in using a number of tools needed in
learning and at work. In addition to methodological skills in investigative learning, students receive other necessary
skills in tasks such as project work methods and diverse types of communication. They also become familiar with
the health care operating environment. Initially, professional knowledge and skill challenges relate to the basic
principles of nursing and public health nursing. As the shared compulsory studies progress in the second year, the
knowledge-based and skill-based professional competences acquired focus increasingly on internal surgery, family,
mental health, crisis and substance abuse nursing, and to working in clinics and on house calls.
Towards the end of their studies, students focus their competence with their chosen optional advanced studies.
They are encouraged to adopt the role of experts in developing innovative and predictive understanding, knowledge
and working theories. The thesis works towards these same aims, giving students opportunities for refining their
career paths. Graduates of both specialisations understand the opportunities of continuous renewal and understand
studies in nursing and public health nursing as a part of a lifelong learning process. Support for professional growth
is based on a holistic conception of humanity, on multidisciplinary learning environments and on learning by
developing in authentic workplace projects.

• The first year's annual theme focuses on initiating the students' professional growth into a multi-disciplinary expert
in the field and a partner in local networks.
• The theme of the second year is to develop the students' professional competence while working in international
networks.
• The third year's theme is to deepen the students' professional competence while working in inter-national
networks.
• The annual theme of the fourth year is to graduate as a developer and modernising expert in the field who
participates in diverse local, national and international networks.

Description of the Degree Programme

The scope of the degree is 210 credits. One credit (cr) corresponds to approximately 27 hours of work by the
student. The degree programme comprises basic studies, professional studies, practical work that promotes
professional expertise, elective studies, a thesis and a maturity test. 90 credits of the total are completed in work
placements, corresponding to the requirements for clinical instruction of Directive 2005/36/EC on the recognition of
professional qualifications into national law. 65 cr of the practical work is conducted as a guided placement in
various health care environments, and 10 cr take place within Laurea's practical learning environments. The
practical work also includes 15 credits in a thesis.
• Practical Work I (10 cr): basic health care
• Practical Work II (15 cr): internal surgical nursing
• Practical Work III (10 cr): mental health nursing
• Practical Work IV (10 cr): home care and reception activity
• Practical Work V (10 cr): advanced practical work in nursing
• Practical Work VI (10 cr): developing nursing
Students at Laurea Hyvinkää can strengthen their expertise in nursing through optional advanced studies, the
thesis, elective studies, and various kinds of projects. Optional advanced studies in Nursing:

• Advanced studies in mental health, crisis management and substance abuse work 25 cr
• Advanced studies in acute and internal surgery nursing 25 cr
Elective studies (15 cr) can be used to deepen or broaden the students’ competence. Students may complete
elective studies from their own or from external degree programme selections. Also suitable are applicable study
units from the Open University of Applied Sciences or from other institutions. Students may also choose optional
advanced studies in nursing as elective studies. The thesis (15 cr) is based on a real-life development challenge. Its
purpose is to support the students' professional development, and to develop the profession and its workplace
practices. It emphasises interaction with the labour market, and an investigative and developmental approach.

Learning Environment for Nursing

At Laurea Hyvinkää, learning is based on participation in authentic development projects for actual employers.
Learning springs from partnerships between lecturers, students and experts from the sector. Development projects
and workshops allow individual and social learning, the generation of new learning data, as well as the production of
innovations in the form of new products, operating models and work cultures. Students acquire methods in R&D and
project work, and learn how to operate in development projects throughout their training. Guidance and self-
evaluation are used to support the personal, ethical and professional growth needed for the field.
International operations form an important part of the degree programme. In addition to the compulsory language
studies, Laurea Hyvinkää offers professional studies in foreign languages, elective language courses, opportunities
for international exchanges or work placements, and various possibilities for internationalisation at home.
Significant investments have been made into the practical environments and tools available for students of Nursing.
The Medical and Care Simulation Center simulates a genuine hospital, including an outpatient department, a shock
therapy room, an intensive care unit and an inpatient ward. Simulations take place with patient simulators. These
are used to practise the critical stages of care from when a patient arrives in an ambulance to when the patient is
sent home. The patient simulators have realistic basic organ functions that react to various care procedures. They
can be used to practise caring for patients with heart failure, intoxication, asthma, injuries and other ailments. Post-
care, there is a designated debriefing workspace where progress can be monitored using video recordings. Some of
the students can also follow procedures on video in the workspace. In addition to care activities, students can use
the simulation to practise their interaction, leadership, team work and decision-making skills. (http://

Study unit description:
Theses form part of Laurea’s research and development work. They help students to grow professionally and are
linked to the employment sector and to regional development. Theses are used to develop work and common
practices, and can produce significant innovations. They are based on a real-life development challenge. They
emphasise interaction with the labour market, and an investigative and developmental approach. Thesis reports
focus on describing target-oriented activities and their results, and on theoretical and research-based analysis.
Theses contain new descriptive, explanatory and investigative information on the labour market, as well as new
know-how produced for the workplace. The study unit involves the completion of a maturity test. In the maturity test,
students demonstrate mastery of the subject and good language skills.

Generic competence: Innovative competence

The thesis process consists of four stages:

• Orientation stage, 1.5 cr
Students become familiar with the thesis process and with information gathering and management, and conduct an
analysis of the topic.
• Planning stage, 3 cr
Students draw up a thesis plan, gather information on the phenomenon at hand, and define the main concepts used
and their interrelationships. They define the object of research and development and apply for the necessary
research permits. Before applying for the permit, the plan must be presented to and approved at a planning seminar.
• Implementation stage, 9 cr
Students carry out the planned research and development task. They gather and analyse theoretical data and
research materials as grounds for their innovation. In collaboration with the partnering organisation, students come
up with a well-founded proposal for a solution/innovation.
• Publication stage, 1.5 cr
The students produce a complete research and development report, successfully present it at a publication seminar
and complete a maturity test. They also upload their theses to the Theseus database.
