12 STUDIES IN NATURAL RESOURCES

The sustainable development programme aims at providing participants with a useful and practi-cal knowledge concerning different aspects of sustainable development. Decision-making by present-day professionals increasingly requires expertise in matters linked to ecological sustain-ability. The well-being of nature on our planet is a prerequisite for the well-being and existence of humans. The growing population needs more and more food and space, which only nature can offer to us either directly or indirectly. Therefore, how we treat nature and its riches is not unim-portant. The aim of sustainable development is both to satisfy our present needs and to take into account future generations’ possibilities to lead comfortable lives.

Sustainable development can be viewed from ecological, economic, social, and cultural perspec-tives. This study programme allows the students to use their knowledge and skills in different cultures and environments, depending on their field of study.

Finnish farming is based on a pure environment and sustainable use of renewable resources. Sustainable agriculture means that farmers use as little fertilisers and pesticides as possible. They use fertilisers only when needed. The climate in Finland is more unfavourable than in the middle and southern parts of Europe. This is the reason for the current interest in organic farming in Finland.

Forestry plays an important role in Finnish farming. We have highly professional skills in forestry management. Landscape Management has become an essential part of forestry activity.

Finland is among the biggest countries in Europe by area and has five million inhabitants. This means that the population density is among the lowest in Europe. Therefore, it is essential to consider the livelihood of rural areas, where enterprises dealing with agriculture, forestry, envi-ronment, leisure activities and other services play a significant role. We emphasise production of pure products containing very few additives.
