5 INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITIES AT LAUREA POLYTECHNIC
Vision
Laurea Polytechnic is an internationally recognised expert in network processes. By integrating international activities into pedagogical, regional, research and development as well as service activities Laurea supports internationalisation of its students and personnel and the regional working life.
Implementation: Building up an International Expertise at Laurea
The Laurea international activities and networks have been structured with regard to Finnish national strategies for success and, accordingly, the students' future employment opportunities. Thus we are most active within the European Union, the Baltic States, the Nordic Countries, and Russia. Laurea has established significant links with Asia (the ASEAN Countries, China, Sri Lanka) and is currently working on opening up its first links with Latin America. Laurea is most active within the EU Socrates Cooperation sending and receiving students under the auspices of the Erasmus grant programme. We also have on-going EU Leonardo projects as well as Nordplus projects supported by the Nordic Council of Ministers.
At Laurea internationalisation is much more than exchanges. We promote IaH, Internationalisation at Home, by an extensive provision of internationally oriented studies including substance (field-specific), culture & language studies as well as practical placements and thesis work. The provision of international studies varies between Degree Programmes. For example, within the Business Administration Programmes, Laurea students can choose from a variety of alternatives providing expertise within different market areas. It is essential to realize that "internationalization" is an angle that can also be chosen within "ordinary" studies.
Students can study in English in most of Laurea Institutes and there are plenty of opportunities to study foreign languages at Laurea. Detailed information of the Laurea Language Programme (see chapter 6) for each Semester is available at the Student Information Offices.
At Laurea, students are encouraged to choose study options - we call them "International Study Paths"- that help them acquire international skills and competencies necessary within specific professional areas or more generally in expert tasks. The 40-credit (60 ECTS) Russia Studies are an example of an International Study Path that has been designed especially for the purposes of polytechnic students and their future employers. This started as a joint effort of several Finnish polytechnics and provides a compact package of Russia oriented studies. The studies include: Russian language and culture (10 cr), professional studies (10 cr), practical placements (10 cr) and thesis (10 cr). Other International Study Paths available are: the Baltics, Hispano-luso or Hilu (El mundo hispano-luso parlante) and Norda (Nordic Countries). Ask for more information with your Insitute’s International Coordinator or consult the Laurea website.
Orientation studies and special events are arranged both at the Institutes and by the Regional Units for incoming and outgoing students. Incoming students have the possibility of completing an Internet based study unit “Welcome to Finland” already before they come to Laurea, the International Coordinator of the institute will assist you in doing this. Outgoing students are required to complete an Internet based study unit “Going Abroad” before the international student exchange, in addition to this also institute spesific study units are organised.
