Having completed the study unit the
student is able to • analyse the meaning of client empowerment in connection to anti-oppressive and
anti-discriminatory approaches to client counseling.
• evaluate the impact of cultural difference on the counselling relationship
• build an empowering alliance with the client, by analysing situations from the client’s
viewpoint
• use basic and advanced counselling skills
• advocate a counselling approach which examines the structural influences on a client’s
life

Learning objectives How do concepts of empowerment apply to counseling? How do we communicate
across cultures? Why is it necessary to develop culturally sensitive counseling
approaches? What are the specific skills required for good counseling?
Contents This study unit develops a student’s competence in building an empowering relationship
with a client. S/he gains client-centred counselling skills and consultation methods. This
is based on an active understanding of interpersonal and intercultural communication
and interviewing strategies as well as the promotion of a more anti-oppressive and
egalitarian counseling approach.
