14.1.2 DEGREE PROGRAMME IN PHYSIOTHERAPY (NO NEW INTAKE 03-04)

BACHELOR OF PHYSIOTHERAPY, 140 CR / 210 ECTS CR

Structure of the Programme

The degree programme consists of 140 CR (210 ECTS Credits). The credits are divided between basic studies, professional studies and intensive studies, and elective studies (Decree 256/95). Basic studies consist of 20 credits (30 ECTS Credits), including the Foundations of multi-professional skills and the Fundamentals of health care and social welfare work. Professional studies consist of 110 credits (165 ECTS Credits), and elective studies of 10 credits (15 ECTS Credits). Following the EU directives, professional studies include a practical study of physiotherapy that covers at least a half of the minimum duration of the programme. A tutor with a higher degree in physiotherapy supervises the clinical studies of physiotherapy. (77/453/ETY).

The core subject of the professional studies is physiotherapy. The core areas of physiotherapy are the analysis and assessment of human posture, movement and action, and the guidance, support and improvement of all of these. In order to gain a deeper understanding of the core areas these studies are supplemented by the study of other subjects. Professional physiotherapists need multidisciplinary knowledge and should, for example, integrate the study of natural sciences and behavioural sciences into the study of the main subject. The sciences that contribute most to expertise in physiotherapy are medicine, natural sciences, sport sciences, social sciences, public health science, and the humanities.

Acquiring skills is essential in the study of physiotherapy, because it is through various manual methods that physiotherapists must try to guide, support and improve peoples’ physical activity. The methods physiotherapists use vary, depending on the clients’ functional ability and activity at different ages. In addition to skills, what is important is the ability to learn while advising others.
