14 STUDIES IN SOCIAL SERVICES, HEALTH AND SPORTS

Work within health care and social services is based on a humanistic concept of human beings in which they are seen as valuable individuals who responsibly build and direct their lives in their own environment and culture. The central values of the action are respect and justice so that everyone has a right for health, well-being and equal health care and social services. The well-being of the human and his or her environment is the challenging goal.

Health care and social services are in a continuous change along with societal development both nationally and internationally. Changes in population, financial conditions, varying employment conditions, different migration movements and the fast development of both technology and science and its consequences are examples of those factors whose influence directs the continuous development of health care and social services. These challenges and the opportunities they offer have also been received when developing polytechnic education for these fields.

A student who has chosen studies within health care and social services at the polytechnic constructs him / herself a learning path which enables the attainment of polytechnic expertise. This path also guides the continuous building of one’s own life and development as a human being.

In his / her studies in health care and social services, the student progresses as a seeker, finder and integrator of different types of knowledge, who reflects by evaluating and choosing different learning experiences. An open learning environment, which includes both professional staff and high quality library and technological services help and support in recognizing one’s own learning strategy and in growing to be self-guiding.

The work within health care and social services is also very international. The Scandinavian concept of well - being, the work done for the well - being of people and environment and the know-how that comes with it, is valuable on the international level. The learning experiences from successful solutions, which promote the construction of good life, are just as valuable. Studies within health care and social services at the polytechnic enable the participation in international co-operation promoting well -being.

The education includes different international student exchanges, many international study paths and co-operation projects of different duration and different scope, which also offer many thesis possibilities.

On the national level, Finnish education in health care and social services offers possibilities for regional development in co-operation with work life in this field. Work life-oriented team projects form an important part of the studies. Through them, the student gets a possibility to participate in a real development process promoting people’s well - being. Work within health care and social services means work for the good of people and environment.
