11 STUDIES IN NATURAL RESOURCES AND THE ENVIRONMENT
Studies in Natural Resources prepares the students for a challenging career in the agriculture, forestry and related fields. The goal is to create professional skills and accumulate know-how to manage biological, technical and economic processes in rural economic life. Our general approach is based on the idea of sustainable development.
Finnish farming is based on a pure environment and sustainable use of renewable resources. Sustainable agriculture means that farmers use as little fertilisers and pesticides as possible. They use fertilisers only when needed. The climate in Finland is more unfavourable than in the middle and southern parts of Europe. This is the reason for the current interest in organic farming in Finland.
Forestry plays an important role in Finnish farming. We have highly professional skills in forestry management. Landscape Management has become an essential part of forestry activity.
Finland is among the biggest countries in Europe by area and has five million inhabitants. This means that the population density is among the lowest in Europe. Therefore, it is essential to consider the livelihood of rural areas, where enterprises dealing with agriculture, forestry, environment, leisure activities and other services play a significant role. We emphasise production of pure products containing very few additives.

11.1 English Language Course Provision in Hyvinkää 2004-2005
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
The sustainable development programme aims at providing participants with a useful and practical knowledge concerning different aspects of sustainable development. Decision-making by present-day professionals increasingly requires expertise in matters linked to ecological sustainability. The well-being of nature on our planet is a prerequisite for the well-being and existence of humans. The growing population needs more and more food and space, which only nature can offer to us either directly or indirectly. Therefore, how we treat nature and its riches is not unimportant. The aim of sustainable development is both to satisfy our present needs and to take into account future generations’ possibilities to lead comfortable lives.
Sustainable development can be viewed from ecological, economic, social, and cultural perspectives. This study programme allows the students to use their knowledge and skills in different cultures and envi-ronments, depending on their field of study.
The Degree Programme in Sustainable Development leads to a Bachelor level degree in Environmental Planning. The full degree requires 240 ECTS Credits (160 Finnish Credits) and takes 4 years of full-time studies. The Tuition language in the full programme is mainly Finnish. The following study module is offered in English in the autumn 2004 and autumn 2005:
Environment and natural resources in Finland and Europe
The module is focusing on the state and changes of natural and built environment, and, in addition, the sustainable use of natural resources, such as forest, peatlands and water resources, using Finnish and European examples.
The module is taught in English and consists of several courses. The programme includes of web-based education, a number of study tours and visits. Some teachers also use the adventure pedagogy as the teaching method.
Courses and examinations are graded on the scale from five to one as follows:
5 = Excellent
4 = Very Good
3 = Good
2 = Satisfactory
1 = Pass
0 = Fail
P = Pass (Evaluated Pass or Fail)
Certain study units and examinations are given the grade Pass or Fail.
The grading system at the Laurea Polytechnic is different from the grading system used in ECTS but, as an informal measure, one should think of the polytechnic grade 5 as approximately the ECTS grade A, of 4 as B, 3 as C, 2 as D and 1 as E.
