Objective and content:
The student
- develops an understanding of cultural differences and their impact on the way in which we communicate as well as our cultural identity
- comprehends the effects of race and ethnicity on social divisions in society and their associate structural inequalities, as well as the manner in which these effect individual clients and group
- understands the concepts and processes of tolerance, cultural adaptation, and stereotyping
- becomes familiar with the theoretical approaches which inform the discipline of Intercultural Communication
- becomes familiar with the theoretical framework of Anti-discriminatory practice, and Multicultural Social Work theory
- applies the learned concepts in working sensitively with clients of different ethnic backgrounds
- learns to identify the particular needs of different ethnic client groups such as women, children & youths, families, and the elderly, and that these needs necessitate culturally sensitive working methods
- develops an awareness of the nature of services available to ethnic minorities in Finland.
