4 INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITIES AT LAUREA

The aim of the teaching activities at Laurea is that the student will acquire skills that are competitive both in Finland and overseas. In today's working environment professional expertise has to include international knowledge and an understanding of different cultures. In this respect Laurea's international activities support its students' professional development. Laurea's aim is to be an international polytechnic participating in innovation activities. The polytechnic’s three tasks – education, regional development and research and development – are also implemented in an international environment, this way we support the internationalisation of students, staff, the local area and the working life of the community.

International elements can be included in all studies at Laurea – not only language and cultural studies, but also the studies related to a chosen profession, job placements and theses. Each student has at his or her disposal opportunities for international learning within Laurea's own programmes. In addition, Laurea is part of a network of around 150 co-operating institutions around the world.

It is always worth applying to study or train overseas during your studies. Experience in other countries teaches us to cope with demanding tasks and helps to improve language skills, knowledge of different cultures, co-operation skills and professionalism. Laurea's wide-ranging international co-operation network reaches around 30 countries. The focus is mainly on universities within the European Union. Other options include Africa, Australia, the Far East, China, Canada and Russia.

Laurea also encourages its students to become international in many other ways, within the framework provided by the polytechnic (= 'internationalisation at home'). Laurea's English Degree Programmes and courses make internationalisation a natural part of the Polytechnic's activities. The professional part of each Degree Programme includes courses related to internationalisation; the options and titles depend on the Degree Programme. The students' professional development is also supported by work assignments, projects and studies carried out from an international angle. Laurea's wide-ranging language programme offers opportunities for studying both well-known and unusual languages and cultures. International theme days, events, projects and visits by experts are part of the day-to-day operation of the Polytechnic. Studies offered transcend the limits of fields of study and institutes, and their extent is freely chosen by the student.

The most important areas in the Finnish economy feature strongly in Laurea's international activities. The student may also choose international routes to specialisation, building professional paths directed towards Baltic Sea Region or the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking world ('el mundo hispano-/lusoparlante', or 'Hilu'). International study paths usually consist of a 60-credit package, broken down into four 15-credit parts: language and cultural studies, degree-related studies, job placement and thesis. Upon completion of the international study path the student will receive a certificate detailing his or her area of specialisation. In addition, students interested in Asian studies can apply for an entitlement to study with the national East and Southeast Asia co-operation network.

Baltic Sea Region Studies

Laurea’s studies on the Baltic Sea Region are based on the EU’s enlargement to the region. The Baltic Sea served its surrounding nations and peoples as a cultural and spiritual unifying element for thousands of years during the Viking era, at the time of the Hansa Alliance and in the Kalmar Union. The significance of the Baltic Sea as a unifying force will again increase when in 2004 it became almost entirely an inland sea of the EU. Northwest Russia and the area around Kaliningrad are seen as essential areas in relation to the Baltic Sea.

In the 2005-2006 academic year students will be able to choose a study path for international expertise focusing on the Baltic Sea Region (e.g. the Baltic countries, the Nordic countries or Russia). Baltic Sea region studies generally form an entity of 60 credits, made up of 15 credits from each of the following areas:
 -language and cultural studies
 -subject-related studies
 -practical studies
 -bachelor's thesis

The studies will begin in the 2. term with a joint introduction, which looks at co-operation in the Baltic Sea region, taking into account Laurea’s areas of expertise in sustainable development, business competence, welfare competence and ICT. This introduction is planned and implemented together with our partner institutions. We have created a network of these partners all around the Baltic Sea region, with institutions in Russia (the St. Petersburg area), Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany, Denmark and Sweden. After receiving a joint introduction and frame of reference students may choose language, cultural and professional studies, practical studies and theses in relation to the Baltic Sea region to include in their personal study plans, from Laurea’s and its partners’ selections.

Studies are designed so that students have the opportunity of specialising geographically within their own professions (e.g. Business in Russia). However, there are also subjects (e.g. ‘the environment’) that facilitate co-operation across different geographic areas and professions. Studies are carried out through multidisciplinary projects, partly online and partly in English. Studies are planned and implemented in co-operation with our partner institutions from the Baltic Sea region.
